Coral is an ancient living organism formed in subtropical oceans by tiny animals called polyps. A single coral usually consists of the home of many polyps. When one polyp dies, another polyp builds its home on top of the first. This happens layer by layer until a large mass is formed known as a "coral reef". From this coral calcium can be obtained to produce many supplements.

Coral calcium supplements are derived from naturally occurring fossil sea corals. The calcium in these supplements is similar to the calcium carbonate found in limestone and other rock formations.
