Fucoxanthin
Fucoxanthin is a natural carotenoid extracted from edible brown algae, such as wakame and kelp, with strong biological activity. Fucoxanthin has been shown to have anti-tumor cell activity. For example, fucoxanthin inhibits TPA-induced activation of human herpesvirus, thereby inhibiting skin tumors induced by TPA. In addition, fucoidan compounds are effective in the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive malignant brain tumor.
Fucoidan
Fucoidan is a polysaccharide mainly from marine brown algae, which consists of sulfated glycan residues and has a wide range of biological activities, such as antitumor, antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. A large number of studies have found that fucoidan not only directly exerts anticancer effects by inducing apoptosis and blocking the cell cycle but also indirectly kills cancer cells by activating natural killer cells and macrophages. Fucoidan can be developed into a new type of antitumor drug because of its high biological activity, wide source, low side effects, and good drug resistance.
