MNPs Derived from Marine Microorganism

The marine environment is very unique, featuring high pressure, high salinity, low oxygen, low temperature, and oligotrophy. As a result, marine microorganisms have different and unique metabolic pathways, reproductive methods, and defense systems, which produce a large number of secondary metabolites with new structures and strong activities. There are many kinds of microorganisms in the ocean, which are widely distributed and have the advantages of short growth cycles, easy metabolism control, artificial large-scale cultivation, easy selection and breeding of strains, and no restriction of the growing season, etc. Therefore, the search for new active compounds from marine microorganisms has become a trend in the study of marine natural products (MNPs).

MNPs Derived from Marine Microorganism

Marine Fungi

The study of marine microbial MNPs first began with marine fungi, where researchers isolated and identified five antibiotics, cephalosporins P1 to P5, from the metabolites of the top cephalosporium, Cephalosporium sp. Additionally, the latest techniques have cultured the marine fungi Aspergillus sydowii, which has potent antitumor activity.

Marine Bacteria

Marine actinomycetes are important producers of MNPs. Antibiotics such as luteomycin, pluramycin, viomycin, and xanthomycin were found to be present in the metabolites of marine actinomycetes. In addition, abyssomicin C, discovered from the marine warthog Verrucosispora sp., has good bioactivity in inhibiting the growth of drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which was the first natural product reported to have inhibitory activity against p-aminobenzoic acid biosynthesis.
