Seaweed Ultimate Elements Analysis

The final (elemental) analysis of the algae will provide the mass concentrations of the main elements (carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur) in the sample. We determine the carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur content of the samples according to international standards. We use an elemental analyzer for sample analysis. We determine the oxygen content by difference according to the following formula:

Oxygen (%) = 100 - Carbon (% dry basis) - Hydrogen (% dry basis) - Nitrogen (% dry basis)
- Sulfur (% dry basis) - Ash (% dry basis)

To perform this calculation, we also need to analyze the ash content of the sample. For this analytical service, we report the dry weight, as-is, and ash-free dry basis content of each analyte (provided that the as-is moisture content of the sample is also determined). Our data on the oxygen and hydrogen content of the samples considered only the oxygen and hydrogen present in the biomass and not the oxygen and hydrogen present in the water.

We report oxygen levels on a dry weight basis, as well as on an as-is and ashless dry weight basis.	Our sample hydrogen content data only considers hydrogen present in biomass, not water.	The total ash content is considered as the fraction of biomass remaining after the sample is incinerated.
