Surface Tension Measurement of Marine Biosurfactant

Marine biosurfactants are surface-active biomolecules that are produced by various marine microorganisms and play an important role in different fields. Commercial use of marine biosurfactants in various industries such as food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, environmental sectors and, interestingly, in the agricultural sector is being documented. The marine biosurfactants are usually divided into: glycolipid, rhamnolipids, trehalolipids, sophorolipids, lipopeptides and lipoproteins, surfactin, lichenysin, polymeric biosurfactants, particulate biosurfactants, fatty acids, phospholipids, and neutral lipids. An important parameter that must be measured is surface tension in marine biosurfactant applications. Surface tension is a measurable value that tells us how strong the attraction between molecules on the surface of a liquid is. The chemical properties that determine the surface tension of a substance affect other properties of that substance. CD BioSciences is a leading provider of surfactant analysis services to surfactant manufacturers. Scientists at CD BioSciences utilize state-of-the-art instrumentation to efficiently and accurately assess the properties of surfactants produced by marine bacteria, including critical micelle concentration and surface tension.
