Overview

Thrombi are organized, hardened blood clots. Normal blood coagulation helps stop blood loss, such as when a minor cut or abrasion occurs. However, blood clots that form in arteries, veins, or the heart are a serious disease. Marine biological resources are one of Earth's most abundant natural resources, and marine drugs are widely used in the medical field. Anticoagulation is one of the important functions of marine natural products (MNPs), which prevent blood coagulation and thrombosis. Classic MNPs and Anticoagulant Activity

  • Seaweed polysaccharides. For example, fucoidan, which is mainly found in brown algae, has significant anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects. Studies have shown that fucoidan exerts its antithrombotic effect by inhibiting platelet aggregation and thrombin generation.
  • Marine bioactive peptides. Bioactive peptides extracted from marine animals such as sea cucumbers and jellyfish have anticoagulant effects. For example, active peptides in sea cucumbers can inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce the risk of thrombosis.
  • Chondroitin sulfate. Chondroitin sulfate extracted from shark cartilage shows anticoagulant and antiplatelet activity which can be used to prevent and treat thrombotic diseases.
  • Carbadocin. Alkaloid compounds extracted from marine bacteria exert their antithrombotic effects by inhibiting coagulation factors.
