Antioxidant

Overview

Reactive free radicals can produce a range of harmful effects on biological membranes and other tissues. There are many kinds of substances in animal, plant, and microbial tissues that can play an antioxidant role, and these substances are mainly free radical scavengers and antioxidants. In recent years, with the intensive development of marine biology research and the improvement of research technology, some compounds with antioxidant activity have been continuously discovered in marine natural products (MNPs). Therefore, the search for new antioxidant drugs from marine organisms has become one of the important goals of marine drug research. CD BioSciences focuses on the research and development of MNPs and is committed to utilizing the unique resources of marine organisms to promote the innovation of antioxidant drugs.

Advantages of MNPs

  • Rich chemical diversity. A wide variety of unique chemical structures exist in marine organisms, and these compounds are often not found in terrestrial organisms.
  • Efficient antioxidant: Many MNPs such as polyphenols, carotenoids, polysaccharides, and alkaloids have powerful antioxidant capacity, which can effectively scavenge free radicals and slow down oxidative stress.
  • Multifunctionality. In addition to antioxidant effects, MNPs also have a variety of biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antibacterial, etc., which can provide a comprehensive solution for the treatment of a variety of diseases.

Classic MNPs and Antioxidant Activity

  • Fucoxanthin. Extracted from brown algae, it has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and can effectively protect cells from oxidative damage.
  • Astaxanthin. Extracted mainly from marine microalgae, it is considered one of nature's strongest antioxidants and can significantly reduce free radical damage to cells.
  • Fucoidan. Enriched in brown algae, it has potent antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects that help prevent chronic diseases.
  • Sponge Polyphenols. Polyphenolic compounds extracted from sponges that exhibit significant antioxidant and anti-tumor activity.

What Can We Offer?

  • Sample Collection and Initial Processing

In collaboration with marine research organizations, we collect samples of marine organisms with potential medicinal value from different marine ecosystems (e.g. coral reefs, deep-sea hydrothermal vents) using underwater sampling techniques. We ensure that the active ingredients of the samples are not destroyed through freeze-drying and pulverization processes. In addition, we utilize cold-chain transportation technology to ensure the stability of the samples during transportation.

  • Active Ingredient Extraction and Separation

We use advanced technologies such as solvent extraction and supercritical fluid extraction to extract active ingredients from marine organisms. In addition, we provide ultrasound-assisted extraction and microwave-assisted extraction technologies to improve extraction efficiency and extraction rate. Our team utilizes separation techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) to separate and purify the extracts to obtain high-purity active compounds.

  • Activity Screening and Identification

We have cell modeling and automated high-throughput screening technologies to test the antioxidant activity of extracts and screen compounds with significant antioxidant activity.

  • Chemical Structure Identification

We provide mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and other techniques for structural characterization of active compounds to determine their chemical structures.

  • Mechanistic Studies

We skillfully use flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and qPCR to study the antioxidant mechanism of natural products at the cellular level and to clarify their targets and signaling pathways. Moreover, through animal models such as mice and rats, we can provide imaging techniques (e.g., MRI, PET) and biomarker detection techniques to verify the antioxidant effects of natural products and to study their metabolic and pharmacokinetic properties in vivo.

  • Pharmacodynamic Evaluation

We support a wide range of animal models to evaluate the efficacy and safety of natural products and to determine their optimal dosage and delivery.
