Applications of Our Marine Organism Models in Neurodegenerative Disease Research

  • By introducing mutations in the human APP and PSEN1 genes into zebrafish, we could mimic the pathological features of Alzheimer's disease, including the formation of Aβ plaques and cognitive dysfunction. This model has been used to screen a variety of potential drugs and revealed several key pathological pathways.

  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Using sea urchin and zebrafish models, we were able to construct mutants of various Parkinson's disease-related genes (such as LRRK2 and SNCA) and observed movement disorders and dopamine neuron degeneration similar to human disease. These models provide valuable resources for understanding the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and drug development.
